“Passing of a Pin-Oak Leaf”
By Ocie Kilgus

Hanging on by a thread,
you can barely sway, shimmy, and shake,
but still . . . you flaunt and dangle the remnants of winter.

When fresh winds come to town,
you spend the night whispering and plotting.
When the sky rains, you weep in solidarity.
When I plead for a new spring,
you turn your back with resolute disdain.

"It is supposed to snow again tonight . . . "
