“The Definition of Love”
By Justine Specht

Love
Affection
Based on
Admiration
Benevolence
An assurance
Of love
Warm attachment
Enthusiasm
Or devotion
Unselfish
Concern
That freely accepts
Another in loyalty
And seeks his good
The attraction
Based on
Sexual desire
The affection
The tenderness
Felt by lovers
The sexual embrace
A beloved person
To hold dear
To feel
A lover’s passion
Devotion
Tenderness
This is
The definition
Of love

"I wrote this poem as an assignment for a creative writing class when I was in Junior High. We had to take a definition from the dictionary and put it in poetic form. It was interesting how beautiful it turned out when it was so simple to put together."

"The Poet Provokes the Moviegoer (and probably a few others)"
By Shane Teter

So music is a cheater --
emotional deceiver:
Seen the action on the screen?
Hear John Williams in your ear?
Now add half-note to footfall.
Then stitch the sound to sight.
Make one false attribution . . .
And you’ve got cinema right.

"One of the great joys in life is to find someone’s non-vital sensibilities and proceed to irritate them in an off-handed way, varying from direct to subtle. Anything really . . . so long as the annoying itch persists. Movie-lovers are a sensitive group. I like that."
